Symptoms involve persistent swelling of the vulva, labia, or perineal region, a feeling of heaviness or tightness, pain, recurrent infections, skin changes like thickening, and the development of lymphangioma circumscriptum (small cystic lesions secreting clear fluid).
Treatments focus on reducing swelling and improving lymphatic flow through compression therapy with garments or bandages, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) techniques, medications like antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, and meticulous skin care to prevent infections. Innovative laser treatments such as Erbium and RecoSMA lasers are used for conditions like lymphangioma circumscriptum.
Surgical options are considered when conservative treatments are insufficient. Procedures include liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue, lymphovenous bypass to create new connections between lymphatic vessels and veins, vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) where healthy lymph nodes are transplanted to the affected area, and excisional surgery to remove excess skin and tissue in severe cases.
